The Gloucester City Centre Community Partnership (CCCP) reflects the views of residents to the various authorities – as you will see from other sections of this website. We also try and resolve many issues of concern raised by residents – below is a link to a schedule of issues we currently have under review.............
What a 'floody' mess! - it really is about time that someone in authority took an interest in the canalside walk / towpath between Llanthony Road and Sainsbury. In the recent heavy rains - indeed several hours after it had stopped raining - this was the scene outside the college. After taking up this matter with British Waterways we have been told that they intend to re-furbish the towpath to alleviate the flooding .............. so we look forward to action, soon!
Greyfriars Community Activity @ the Greyfriars Bowling Green - exciting progress. Although this project has not developed as quickly as originally anticipated it is now back on track with meetings taking place to plan the way forward.
The plan is to create a community & youth facility in the heart of this great City by bringing both the green and building into community use. Good news is that several thousand pounds in grants has been obtained to organise events on the green.
The first step however is to make the green safe for activities at a cost of £11,000. CCCP has managed to put together the funds and volunteers to do the job, including a grant of £4,200 from the Safer Gloucester Partnership - so the work can commence ........... more news soon.
Safe Crossing LlanthonyRoad / Hemmingsdale Road - behind college: following pressure from the CCCP, Hempsted Police Team and the Hempsted Residents Association our concerns about this unsafe crossing point have been listened to by County Highways. A solution has been agreed - a pedestrian refuge will be built thus enabling pedestrians to cross this busy road in greater safety. The work on providing the refuge is due to commence in January 2011 - for further details contact us.
Gate Street action needed now!! We have highlighted yet again the problems with traffic in the pedestrianised areas of the Gate Streets, especially about the poor monitoring of delivery vehicle movements after 10 a.m. No vehicle should be on the pedestrianised areas of the Gate Streets after 10 a.m. - the photograph opposite taken at 11.30 a.m. This is traffic is a clear danger to pedestrians. Add to this the newly developed pedestrian areas in Southgate Street the problem can only get worse unless someone with the authority takes action. The problem from our view is that nobody seems to want to take responsibility for enforcing the rules!! Enforcement action awaited.
Right turn: Southgate Street / St Ann Way: again an issue we have been raising with several organisations. The County Highways requested an additional traffic modelling of the junction. The CCCP agreed with this approach as the best way to prove the case or otherwise as to how this junction is working and indeed could work. We will update the website as soon as the plans are clear.
Pedestrian Safety at Spa Lights: the CCCP has been highlighting residents concerns regarding pedestrian safety at Spa lights for some time. Following pressure from the CCCP the County Highways have now confirmed that they will be replacing the traffic lights with a mini roundabout. The County Highways description of the new arrangement: “The existing pedestrian refuge in Southgate Street will be widened. A new pedestrian refuge on the City side will be installed. Spa Road will be narrowed to one lane onto the roundabout. This will be easier for pedestrians to cross." Start date to be announced soon – watch this space for details...
Lower Southgate Street Area: numerous residents and visitors have commented on the deterioration of the visual impact of this street in recent months. One look at the area and one cannot help but agree - numerous empty shop units, vandalism, litter, poor StreetCare, street drinkers, poor quality frontages, pedestrian safety at Spa lights (see above). With such a level of complaints CCCP intends to have a major review of the area with the involvement of residents/ businesses and hopefully City Council with the objective of not only setting their priorities but also planning short, medium and long term solutions. If you wish to be involved in this project email info@gloscccp.co.uk
Quayside / Lock Warehouse to Westgate Street: a constantly recurring complaint about the maintenance of this stretch of riverside - there does not seem to be any scheduled maintenance plan. We say this because the only time this stretch along the river appears to be cleaned up is when the residents complain and even then it is never done properly. It really is about time the City Council and British Waterways got their act together! We continue to lobby both parties.
Gloucester Park - damaged footways: footpath and grass verges are damaged in several areas of the Park. Along the southern edge of the park the damage has been caused by the annual visit of the fair and made worse during the year by the passage of Enterprise vehicles. On the west side, an area including wildlife area & footpaths again footpaths and grass verges are damaged, damage which has been caused by Enterprise maintenance and contractor vehicles.
The CCCP is not only pursuing the repair of the footways but also the development of a project to bring the western area into public 'use' - such a project should include wildlife area. A site meeting between CCCP and City Council has been arranged - we will report back on the results.
CCCP is following up many more issues raised by residents. Keep an eye on this page as it will be updated regularly or to be kept in touch register for updates by forwarding you details to info@gloscccp.co.uk
